From September 2007 to the end of 2008, RLDP implemented a pilot project in Bariadi district, Shinyanga region, which aimed at testing how to improve production and marketing of poultry. At
the production level, trainings were offered to groups formed to improve housing, supplementary food supply, early chicks weaning, administration of vaccines and drugs, marketing of chicken and saving and lending to increase their capital revolving capacities. There have been traders’ workshops to improve their linkage with trained groups and even raise awareness of improved chicken production and methods of transportation. The project succeeded in increasing income of the producers and created additional income for women. Just in a year the project achieved a 600% increase in chicken production. After the results in Bariadi district the project was replicated to 135 villages in nine districts in the central corridor regions. About 7200 rural households where reached. This experience is carried over in fourth phase so that the experience can be shared to other areas of the central corridor.
